Tips For Installation
Prepare the Surface
The key to a successful installation starts with proper surface preparation. Make sure the helmet or surface where the vinyl graphic will be applied is thoroughly cleaned. Use a mild cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to remove any grease, dirt, or residues. The cleaner the helmet, the better the adhesive will bond. Avoid using cleaners with wax or oil, as they can leave a film that interferes with adhesion. Allow the helmet to dry completely before applying the vinyl to ensure the best possible results.
Optimal Temperature
Temperature plays a vital role in the adhesion process. The ideal temperature range for applying vinyl graphics is between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Applying graphics in extreme temperatures, either too hot or too cold, can cause the adhesive to fail or the vinyl to stretch and deform. In colder conditions, use a heat gun to gently warm the vinyl for better flexibility. Similarly, in very hot conditions, ensure the vinyl doesn’t overheat, as it can lose its shape and be difficult to apply.
Use the Right Tools
Having the right tools is crucial for a smooth and professional-looking application. A squeegee, card or application tool helps press the vinyl down evenly, eliminating air bubbles and wrinkles. A utility knife or scissors will be needed to trim excess vinyl around the edges. Additionally, using a heat gun or hairdryer can help soften the vinyl when applying it to curved surfaces or colder environments, ensuring better adhesion and flexibility. Be gentle and use the tools in a controlled manner to avoid damaging the vinyl or surface.
Alignment
Before you start applying the vinyl, take the time to align it properly on the helmet. Avoid rushing into the process; make sure the graphic is centred or placed according to the design plan. You can lightly mark the edges of the surface with a pencil or masking tape to create a guide for where the graphic should go. Once aligned, peel back a portion of the backing paper and press the vinyl down slowly while smoothing it out. This will help prevent any air bubbles or wrinkles as you apply it to the entire surface.
Work Slowly
Patience is key when applying vinyl graphics. Rushing through the installation can lead to mistakes, such as misaligning the graphics or creating air bubbles. Work in small sections, applying the vinyl slowly and steadily to ensure smooth and even adhesion.
If you encounter any bubbles, smooth them out with a squeegee or needle. If the graphic starts to lift, use a heat gun to soften the adhesive and reapply it. Taking your time will result in a more polished, professional-looking finish that will last longer.
Post Application Care
Once you’ve applied your sticker kit, we recommend giving the vinyl at least 24-48 hours to fully adhere to the surface before exposing it to harsh conditions like washing or rain. During this time, avoid touching the edges or putting any pressure on the vinyl.
It’s also important not to wash the area immediately after application, as this could weaken the adhesive. After the waiting period, you can gently clean the surface, but avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the vinyl.
Patience and Readjustments
If you notice any errors or imperfections during the application, don’t panic! Vinyl is often more forgiving than it seems. Carefully peel back the section and reapply it as needed, especially if you see wrinkles, bubbles, or misalignment. If there are lifting edges, use a heat gun, warm it up and press them down.
Even if you make mistakes, don’t rush; take your time to fix them. With patience and care, you’ll achieve a flawless finish.
